Applied Research Methods and Management.

Developing a basic understanding of the design and management of empirical research for answering social science and policy research questions it then covers how to critically evaluate the tendering of research projects, and the ensuing products. This element will form the basis of the assessment. Key topics and outcomes are:

  • Commissioning and managing research contracts- based upon DCLG research and analysis contract managers manual.
  • Understanding the effectiveness of spatial and economic policy interventions - Magenta and Green books.
  • Researching Design and Data Collection (case study method) for Local and Regional Economic Development.
  • Understanding the case study approach and the basics of policy research
  • Evaluating a policy research proposal
  • Achieving acceptable academic writing and presentation standards

Students will carry out pieces of independent research on a specific policy research contract tender. This element will form the basis of the assessment via a piece of applied research (3,500-4,000 words).
