I initially applied to the EDDLC for two reasons: firstly, to learn more about Economic Development, and secondly (and more importantly) to get a qualification to enable me to move into that sector as a career. When I finally enrolled on the course I found that most students on the course already worked as Economic Development Officers which, although I found daunting, reassured me I was on a course used by professionals already in the industry.
Because the course is focused on the individual and their learning goals and motivations, with each student’s personal circumstances taken fully into consideration, when I needed to put my studies on hold when my sister was terminally ill, this was permitted without hesitation and I was able to return when I was ready. I felt totally supported and didn't have the worry of an assignment hanging over me during a difficult time.
Course tutors were always on hand and willing to help, with e-mails answered promptly and the option of them casting a helpful eye over your draft assignment before submission if needed. You always felt as though support was there if you needed it, in fact, if you asked me to name the three things that I enjoyed most of my time in the EDDLC it would be the tutors, the workshops, and Elspeth who does all the admin.
My time on the EDDLC helped me understand more about the work of my colleagues and to realise my ultimate goal of getting a job within the industry, which turned out be an internal application to become a Community Planning Officer.
